Responsible AI

How we use AI — and how we don't.

Families trust us with a high-stakes goal and a young person's data. These are the commitments behind every AI feature in Scorely.

1. AI is a tutor, not a shortcut

The tutor is designed to teach. It asks students to attempt a problem before revealing the solution, explains why wrong answers are wrong, and turns mistakes into prevention rules.

It declines to help with live, proctored exams or active graded assessments, and it coaches — but never writes — college essays.

2. Grounded in a reviewed curriculum and real data

Answers are grounded in our SAT curriculum and a curated knowledge base (retrieval-augmented generation), plus the student's actual results. The tutor is instructed never to invent scores or history.

Scores, mastery levels and learning plans are produced by transparent, deterministic models — not by AI improvisation — so the dashboard, the plan and the tutor always agree.

Score projections are clearly labelled as estimates. Scorely is not affiliated with the College Board, and we encourage students to take the official Bluebook practice tests.

3. Humans stay in the loop

AI-drafted practice questions are placed in a review queue and never reach students until a person approves them.

Administrators can review tutor conversations to improve quality and safety, and can update the tutor's instructions and knowledge base at any time.

4. Privacy and data minimisation

We collect only what the product needs: name, email, goals, schedule and study activity. We never sell student data or use it for advertising.

Student data is not used to train third-party AI models. AI providers are contractually restricted from training on API data.

Data is encrypted in transit; passwords are hashed with Argon2id; sessions are revocable. Families can request export or deletion at any time.

5. Age-appropriate and safe

The tutor stays on SAT prep and study skills, avoids personal data collection, and responds to signs of distress with empathy and a pointer to trusted adults and crisis resources (call or text 988 in the US).

Parents get their own login with visibility into progress, and conversations can be shared with a parent or teacher by link.

6. Fair and transparent usage

Each plan has a clear monthly AI allowance shown in the app, so there are no surprise limits. We monitor quality and cost, and choose models for accuracy and safety rather than hype.
